How Much Fuel Would a GTA Police Chase Really Burn?

Quick answer: in the GTA6DATA pursuit model used here, one police SUV actively chasing for 10 minutes burns about 0.5 US gallon (1.9L) of gasoline. The fuel problem becomes much larger when a GTA-style response escalates. Using the same response packages as our wanted-level cost model, a 10-minute five-star-style pursuit with 25 ground units and two helicopters would consume about 23.2 gallons (87.6L) of fuel. Keep that response going for an hour and the model reaches roughly 138.9 gallons (526L).

The surprising part is that the police helicopter can burn more fuel than a large group of patrol vehicles. Bell lists 127.8 gallons of standard fuel and four hours of maximum endurance for the Bell 407GXi. Dividing those published figures gives a simple average of about 32 gallons per hour under the listed endurance conditions. One helicopter can therefore consume more fuel in 10 minutes than ten police SUVs in this editorial road-pursuit model.

Why a Police Chase Uses More Fuel Than Normal Driving

A GTA pursuit is almost a checklist of everything that reduces fuel economy: repeated acceleration, hard braking, rapid changes in speed, high road speed, detours and long periods with emergency equipment powered.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center says aggressive driving can reduce fuel economy by approximately 15%–30% at highway speeds and 10%–40% in stop-and-go traffic. DOE also notes that fuel economy generally drops as speed rises above about 50mph.

That means a normal city or highway MPG figure should not simply be copied into a GTA chase. A police vehicle repeatedly accelerating out of intersections and then braking hard is operating in a very different duty cycle.

The GTA6DATA Ground-Pursuit Fuel Model

Police vehicles vary enormously by engine, hybrid system, mass, equipment and route. Rather than pretend one MPG value is universal, this article uses a deliberately transparent comparison model.

The 25% penalty sits inside DOE’s published range for aggressive driving. The 20mpg reference and 45mph average are editorial assumptions, not ratings for a specific police department or vehicle.

So one chase car is not the shocking result. Half a gallon in ten minutes is noticeable, but hardly a municipal emergency. GTA becomes interesting when the game keeps adding vehicles.

A Real Police Vehicle Shows Why Idling Matters Too

Modern police vehicles are not ordinary commuter cars with a light bar attached. Ford’s current 2025 Police Interceptor Utility is offered with a 3.3L hybrid, a 3.3L gasoline V6 or a 400hp 3.0L EcoBoost V6. Ford also gives the vehicle a dedicated Police Pursuit Mode.

The hybrid is especially interesting for this article because police vehicles spend substantial time stationary while still powering computers, radios, lighting and other equipment. Ford says the hybrid system can power onboard equipment with the gasoline engine off and estimates potential savings of up to 838 gallons per year under its fleet-use assumptions.

That fits older Department of Energy findings about police duty cycles. DOE’s Idling Reduction for Emergency and Other Service Vehicles reported one police cruiser spending 60% of normal operating time idling and using 21% of its total fuel while parked. The exact percentage will not apply to every modern fleet, but the basic lesson remains useful: police fuel consumption does not stop when the pursuit stops moving.

The Helicopter Changes the Fuel Equation

Now add the aircraft. The Bell 407GXi is a useful real-world public-safety helicopter reference because Bell explicitly markets the platform for public-safety missions and publishes both fuel capacity and endurance.

Bell lists 127.8 US gallons (482.8L) of standard fuel and 4.0 hours maximum endurance at its stated conditions with no reserve. Dividing fuel by endurance gives:

127.8 gal ÷ 4.0 h = 31.95 gal/h

≈ 5.3 gal in 10 minutes
≈ 16.0 gal in 30 minutes
≈ 32.0 gal in 60 minutes

This is not a claim that a police Bell 407 always burns exactly 31.95 gallons per hour. The published four-hour figure is a maximum-endurance condition; hovering, orbiting, payload, altitude, temperature and mission profile can all change actual fuel flow. The calculation is used as a manufacturer-data-based scale reference.

Even with that conservative interpretation, the result is dramatic. In our road model, ten pursuit SUVs burn about 5 gallons in ten minutes. One Bell 407 reference aircraft uses about 5.3 gallons over the same time scale.

How Much Fuel Would Each GTA Wanted Level Burn?

To keep this article consistent with the series, we reuse the deployment ladder from Episode 5’s wanted-level cost model. These are GTA6DATA comparison packages, not Rockstar spawn counts or LAPD policy.

The jump from two to three stars is the most interesting in this model because aviation enters the response. Six ground vehicles only burn about 3 gallons in the ten-minute road model, while the single helicopter adds about 5.3 gallons by itself.

What If Five Stars Lasts 30 Minutes or One Hour?

GTA chases often end quickly because the player escapes, dies or changes vehicles. But a real large-scale pursuit can become a long operational event. Keeping the same five-star-style package active produces:

That means a one-hour, five-star-style chase in this model uses more than half a cubic meter of liquid fuel. The ground fleet accounts for 75 gallons; the two Bell-reference helicopters account for almost another 64 gallons.

It still is not a fuel-tanker-scale event. The absurdity comes from repetition. One modeled one-hour five-star chase every day for a year would consume about 50,700 gallons (192,000L) of combined road and aviation fuel before counting vehicles arriving late, ambulances, tow trucks, tactical trucks or replacement units.

How Many Gas Stations Is That?

“139 gallons” still sounds abstract, so let us compare it with the amount of fuel sitting under a service station. A National Renewable Energy Laboratory report estimated that U.S. gasoline stations have about 3.3 underground storage tanks on average, with individual tanks commonly ranging from roughly 4,000 to 12,000 gallons. EPA underground-storage guidance also uses a 10,000-gallon tank as a practical operating example.

For a simple GTA Science visualization, imagine a station with the NREL average of 3.3 tanks and give each tank 10,000 gallons of nominal capacity. That creates a comparison station holding about 33,000 gallons across all products.

So one spectacular GTA chase would not drain a gas station. In this comparison it barely makes a dent in the station’s stored volume. Repetition is what turns the joke into logistics: one full-scale one-hour chase every day would move through about one and a half comparison-stations’ worth of liquid-fuel volume per year.

There is an important fuel-type caveat. The 33,000-gallon station analogy is only a volume comparison. The ground vehicles in this model use gasoline, while the Bell 407 reference helicopter uses aviation turbine fuel. A normal roadside gas station cannot simply refuel the helicopters. If we compare only the 25 ground units, their 75 gallons of gasoline per one-hour five-star chase equals about 0.23% of the comparison station; one such chase every day for a year would consume about 27,375 gallons, or roughly 83% of one 33,000-gallon station-load.

What Would the Fuel Bill Be — and What Would the Gas Station Earn?

Fuel volume is only half the economics. The police department pays a fuel bill, while the station records sales revenue. Those are not the same thing as the station’s profit.

To keep this comparison stable instead of chasing a retail price that changes every week, GTA6DATA uses a deliberately fictional rate card:

A one-hour five-star pursuit would therefore create a modeled fuel bill of about $683. Run one every day for a year and the combined road-and-air fuel bill reaches approximately $249,000. Five one-hour five-star pursuits every day would push the annual fuel line to roughly $1.25 million.

But How Much of That $300 Gasoline Sale Is Profit?

This is where the gas-station side becomes surprisingly small. NACS, the U.S. convenience and fuel retailing trade association, reported in March 2026 that retail fuel gross margins before expenses have averaged about 38 cents per gallon over the previous five years. After operating expenses that are typically above 20 cents per gallon, NACS says a retailer may see roughly 15 cents per gallon of pre-tax profit.

That is a useful GTA economics lesson: a station can ring up more than half a million dollars in gasoline sales without making anything close to half a million dollars in fuel profit. Under this comparison, five extreme five-star pursuits every day for a full year generate about $547,500 of pump revenue but only around $20,500 of pre-tax fuel profit.

The helicopter side belongs to a different fuel business. At the fictional $6/gal aviation rate, the two Bell-reference helicopters in a one-hour chase account for about $383 of fuel sales, but this article does not apply the NACS roadside-gasoline margin to aviation fuel suppliers.

GTA6DATA Comment: The police department sees a $683 fuel bill. The gas station sees $300 of pump sales. After fuel costs and operating expenses, the station owner may look at the chase and think: “All that chaos for eleven bucks?”

The Chase Does Not Stop Burning Fuel When the Suspect Stops

This is where GTA hides an entire second fuel bill. When a wanted level disappears, the game can despawn or redirect the response almost immediately. A real incident has an after-phase.

  • Police vehicles remain on scene with lights, radios and computers operating.
  • Roadblocks and traffic control can continue after the suspect is secured.
  • Supervisors, investigators and collision units may arrive.
  • Tow trucks and recovery vehicles remove damaged cars.
  • Aircraft must leave the pursuit area and return to base.

DOE’s general light-duty guidance says idling can use roughly 0.2–0.5 gallon per hour depending on vehicle and conditions. Emergency vehicles can have unusual auxiliary loads, which is why police-specific idle-reduction systems and hybrid power are valuable.

So the tables above should be read as active pursuit fuel only. They deliberately exclude post-chase idling, repositioning and return-to-base mileage.

How Much CO₂ Comes From the Ground Vehicles?

The U.S. EPA currently uses about 8,887 grams of tailpipe CO₂ per gallon of gasoline burned. That allows a simple emissions check for the gasoline ground fleet.

In the one-hour five-star model, the 25 ground units burn 75 gallons:

75 gal × 8.887 kg CO₂/gal ≈ 667 kg CO₂

That is roughly 0.67 metric tonne of tailpipe CO₂ from the modeled ground pursuit alone. The figure does not include helicopter emissions because the aircraft uses aviation turbine fuel rather than motor gasoline, and this article avoids mixing the two fuels under one gasoline emission factor.

What About a Hybrid Police Fleet?

A hybrid does not make high-speed pursuit free. At sustained power demand, the engine still has to provide substantial energy. The biggest advantage can appear during all the time surrounding the chase: traffic monitoring, report writing, scene control and equipment operation.

Ford’s claim of up to 838 gallons of annual potential fuel savings for the 2025 Police Interceptor Utility hybrid is therefore a reminder that police fuel economics are dominated by the entire duty cycle, not only the dramatic ten minutes shown in GTA.

This also means GTA’s pursuit may be the least efficient slice of the vehicle’s day. The game shows us full-throttle acceleration and crashing through traffic; the fleet manager has to pay for the other twenty-three hours and fifty minutes too.

What GTA Gets Right

  • More wanted-level units mean more fuel being consumed at the same time.
  • Hard acceleration, braking and high speeds are inefficient.
  • Helicopters make high-level police response dramatically more resource-intensive.
  • Police vehicles often need to keep electrical equipment powered even when stationary.

What GTA Hides

  • The fuel already burned while units drive toward the pursuit.
  • Post-incident idling and scene management.
  • Helicopter transit to and from the operating area.
  • Fuel for ambulances, fire vehicles, tow trucks and tactical support.
  • Fuel wasted or recovered from damaged vehicles.
  • Refueling logistics and the downtime required to return vehicles to service.

The GTA Science Verdict

A single police car chasing a GTA protagonist is not a huge fuel event. In our transparent 15mpg / 45mph pursuit model, it burns about half a gallon in ten minutes.

The scale changes when the response becomes GTA-sized. Six cars and one helicopter reach about 8.3 gallons in ten minutes. Twelve cars and one helicopter reach about 11.3 gallons. Twenty-five ground units and two helicopters reach about 23.2 gallons in ten minutes and almost 139 gallons in one hour.

And that still only counts the vehicles actively pursuing the suspect. Real policing has an approach phase, an incident phase and a cleanup phase. GTA only needs the dramatic middle.
