Quick answer: a GTA character staying underwater for roughly a minute while actively swimming is at least within the broad scale seen in human breath-hold research. Staying down for two or three minutes while moving is already much more specialized. Five minutes of active underwater swimming, fighting or searching without breathing equipment would be an exceptional physiological performance, while the extreme static-apnea records above nine and eleven minutes are not comparable to a character swimming around Los Santos.
Rockstar actually acknowledges the basic biology. Its official Social Club statistics include Lung Capacity as a GTA V and GTA Online skill, and current GTA Online patch notes still reference underwater rebreathers. The game therefore separates two very different questions: how long the character can operate on one breath, and how long equipment can keep supplying breathable gas.

GTA Already Treats Lung Capacity as a Character Skill
Rockstar’s own GTA V Social Club statistics list Lung Capacity alongside character-performance statistics. GTA Online’s official stats pages do the same. That is an unusually science-friendly mechanic: the game is effectively saying that underwater endurance is not a fixed universal timer for every human. It is one of the rare moments where GTA admits biology cannot be solved by buying a faster car.
That part is realistic in principle. Breath-hold performance varies enormously with training status, lung volume, metabolic demand, body composition, psychological tolerance of rising carbon dioxide and the human diving response.
Rockstar also treats breathing equipment separately. In GTAV Title Update 1.71, Rockstar specifically documented a fix for rebreathers depleting too quickly underwater during The Cayo Perico Heist. So GTA’s design already contains the two systems we need for this experiment: biological breath-holding and equipment-limited underwater endurance.

What Actually Ends a Breath Hold?
A breath hold is not simply a countdown until the lungs become “empty.” Oxygen is being consumed by the body’s tissues while carbon dioxide accumulates. The urge to breathe is strongly influenced by rising carbon dioxide, while loss of consciousness becomes a risk when oxygen availability falls too far.
Humans also show a diving response during apnea: heart rate can fall and blood flow can be redistributed in ways that help conserve oxygen for vital organs. Published studies in trained breath-hold divers show that this response changes during static and dynamic apnea, but swimming muscles still require energy. A GTA character who is kicking, turning, climbing, collecting objects or fighting underwater is therefore doing something very different from lying motionless during a static breath hold.

One Minute Is Very Different When You Are Swimming
A useful experiment published in Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine compared breath holding at rest with breath holding during progressively greater exercise. Mean breath-hold break times were about 57 seconds at rest, then 50, 48 and 46 seconds during 20W, 40W and 60W exercise conditions.

This should not be turned into a universal “46-second safe limit.” The study itself argues against a universal time rule because oxygen depletion depends on metabolic rate and individual physiology. For GTA Science, the important result is the direction of the effect: movement spends the oxygen budget faster. The Lung Capacity bar may be simple; metabolism still charges by the activity.
How Far Could One Breath Take a GTA Character?
Time is only one way to measure underwater endurance. GTA players usually care about distance: can the character cross a channel, reach a wreck, swim through a drainage tunnel or escape a search area before surfacing? The objective marker does not move closer just because the oxygen bar has started making the situation personal.
A 2025 study directly measured the energetic cost of competitive dynamic apnea with fins. For bi-fins, the reported energy cost was approximately 7.4 joules per meter per kilogram of body mass at the speeds examined.
For an illustrative 80kg GTA-style character, that works out to:

That calculation is not an oxygen-tank gauge. The published energy cost includes aerobic and anaerobic contributions, and real GTA swimming technique is not competitive bi-fin freediving. It does show why “Lung Capacity” cannot realistically be the only variable. Swimming economy matters. A character wasting energy with inefficient kicks should burn through the physiological budget faster than an elite streamlined diver. Water is surprisingly strict about charging extra for bad technique.
What Can Trained Humans Actually Do?
The range is enormous. In a 2023 study of novice breath-hold divers, two weeks of dry apnea training increased the group’s mean breath-hold time to approximately 144 seconds, with very large individual variation. That is already over two minutes, but it was a controlled breath-hold test rather than a GTA character sprint-swimming underwater while carrying weapons.
At the extreme end, AIDA’s current official records make ordinary comparisons almost meaningless. As checked on August 19, 2026, AIDA lists Stéphane Mifsud at 11:35 for the men’s Static Apnea world record and Heike Schwerdtner at 9:39 for the women’s record.

The world-record numbers are impressive precisely because they are specialist performances under controlled conditions. They should not be used as evidence that a normal GTA protagonist can spend ten minutes swimming through a harbor on one breath.

Static Apnea Is Not GTA Apnea
This is the biggest trap when comparing GTA with freediving records. Static apnea is designed to minimize movement and metabolic demand. GTA underwater gameplay does almost the opposite. World-record attempts generally do not include escaping police, searching wrecks or stopping to collect something that glows.
- Swimming requires repeated muscular work.
- Changing direction increases drag and wastes momentum.
- Carrying equipment changes body position and hydrodynamics.
- Cold water can change cardiovascular and respiratory responses.
- Stress and panic can raise metabolic demand.
- Fighting, opening objects or climbing consumes additional energy.
A more honest real-world analogue for GTA is therefore dynamic apnea: underwater movement on one breath. Modern research shows that dynamic apnea produces a distinct cardiovascular response and meaningful oxygen desaturation compared with static apnea or exercise alone.
Depth Changes the Problem Even If the Timer Does Not
GTA often treats swimming 3m below the surface and swimming far deeper as mostly the same stamina problem. Human physiology does not. The ocean has no difficulty slider, and pressure does not care how full the stat bar looks.
NOAA states that ocean pressure increases by approximately one atmosphere for every 10.06m (33ft) of depth. Including the atmosphere already pressing on the surface, total ambient pressure is therefore roughly 2 atmospheres at 10m, 3 at 20m, 4 at 30m and 5 at 40m.

This means a GTA character descending to 40m is not merely spending another 30 seconds on the same lung-capacity bar. The gas spaces are under around five times surface pressure, equalization becomes important, and the respiratory system is operating under very different mechanical conditions.
At What Depth Does the Human Lung Become the Bigger Problem?
Deep breath-hold diving can produce pulmonary barotrauma often called lung squeeze. A 2024 survey study collected 140 reported squeeze incidents from 103 freedivers; the average reported depth of an incident was approximately 43m.

That does not make 43m a threshold where injury suddenly begins, and it does not mean shallower dives are automatically safe. It does show why GTA-style deep dives cannot be reduced to “the character has enough oxygen left.” Depth introduces a second set of mechanical limits before the breath timer reaches zero.
The Most Dangerous Part Can Be the Last Few Meters Back Up
One of GTA’s most convenient assumptions is that if the oxygen bar has not completely emptied, surfacing is automatically safe. Real breath-hold diving is less forgiving.
During ascent, ambient pressure falls. A diver who has already consumed much of the available oxygen can experience a rapid decrease in oxygen partial pressure near the surface. Divers Alert Network notes that blackout risk is concentrated near the surface and immediately after surfacing, and the CDC warns against prolonged underwater breath holding and hyperventilation because hypoxic blackout can lead to drowning.

This article intentionally does not provide breath-hold-extension or hyperventilation instructions. The science is useful for analyzing GTA, but deliberately pushing underwater breath holds is a real drowning hazard.
How Long Could a GTA Character Stay Down While Doing Different Things?
There is no scientifically defensible single timer for “a GTA character,” so the best approach is to compare gameplay situations with the scale of published human performance.

The key distinction is that one minute of calm breath holding and one minute of underwater combat are not the same biological task. A game can attach both to one Lung Capacity stat. The human body cannot simplify the accounting that neatly.
Could Training Really Increase a GTA Lung Capacity Stat?
Yes — as a general concept, this is one of the more believable GTA character stats. The 2023 novice-diver study reported a 33.77% increase in mean breath-hold time after two weeks of structured dry apnea training, reaching 144.19±47.35 seconds in that group.
But the improvement was not simply “the lungs became 34% larger.” Breath-hold performance reflects multiple adaptations and tolerances, including cardiovascular responses and the ability to tolerate the increasing discomfort of apnea. GTA compresses all of that physiology into a convenient percentage bar.
That is exactly what a good game statistic should do: simplify many biological variables into one readable progression system.
What About the Rebreather?
Once a GTA character uses a rebreather, the experiment changes completely. Breath-hold physiology is no longer the main timer because the character is receiving breathable gas from equipment. Rockstar’s own update history explicitly treats the rebreather as something that can deplete underwater, confirming that GTA Online models it as a finite resource rather than infinite aquatic lungs. The problem has moved from physiology to inventory management, which is much more familiar GTA territory.
A real rebreather is also far more complicated than an extended breath bar: it manages breathing gas in a loop and requires control of carbon dioxide and oxygen. This article does not assume that GTA’s handheld-looking rebreather animation is a technically accurate representation of a real closed-circuit system. For gameplay, its role is simpler: convert underwater endurance from a body limit into an equipment limit.

How Episode 9 Changes the Answer
In GTA Science Episode 9, we asked whether water can save a character from a huge fall. Surviving the impact is only the first half of the problem.
A character who falls from a bridge or helicopter into deep water may enter several meters below the surface, disoriented and already under stress. They then have to stabilize, identify the surface and swim upward while consuming oxygen. In real physiology, the “successful water landing” and the “successful underwater escape” are not separate magic resets. They happen to the same body on the same oxygen budget.
That makes GTA’s water even more forgiving than Episode 9 first suggested. The game often grants both a survivable impact and enough underwater performance to swim away immediately afterward. The ocean has already waived the crash bill; asking it to waive the oxygen bill too is generous even by Los Santos standards.
The GTA Science Verdict
How long could a GTA character really stay underwater? There is no single human answer, but the scale becomes clearer once movement is included.
- Around one minute: plausible on the scale of published breath-hold research, depending heavily on workload and individual ability.
- Two to three minutes: clearly achievable by trained breath-hold practitioners, but increasingly impressive if the character is actively swimming rather than resting.
- Five minutes while actively swimming, searching or fighting: exceptional and no longer comparable to ordinary human underwater endurance.
- Nine to eleven-plus minutes: real static-apnea world-record territory, but not evidence for equivalent active GTA-style swimming.
- Deep dives around tens of meters: pressure, equalization and lung mechanics become additional constraints even before time runs out.
- With a rebreather: breath-hold comparisons stop being the right model because underwater time becomes equipment-supported.
GTA gets one important idea right: underwater endurance can improve as a skill. What the game simplifies is everything hidden inside that stat — oxygen use, carbon dioxide tolerance, swimming economy, depth pressure, stress, equipment and the dangerous final ascent back to air.

The unrealistic part is expecting one Lung Capacity bar to explain every dive from a quiet pool to a 40-meter escape with a gunfight in the middle. That is less a physiology model than a very optimistic accounting department.
